Should I get Magic+ Bands for a Disney Cruise?

While some of the functionality will work when the battery is depleted, the band won’t light up or interact with the ship. You can connect the band to your Disney Cruise Line Navigator app through Bluetooth, and it will show you the battery level. You can purchase them 45 days in advance of your sailing if your sailing is eligible. They will be shipped directly to your home and should be connected to your account. You can get the Disney Cruise Line limited bands by purchasing this way.

DisneyBand+ Coming to Disney Magic Cruise Ship in October

If you’ve been on a Disney Cruise before with kids, you are probably familiar with the Disney Oceaneer bands that are provided to kids entering the kids’ clubs. These bands are similar to the MagicBand+ but don’t have all of the features. The Disney Oceaneer band is given to guests at no cost but must be returned at the end of your sailing or you’ll be charged a fee for them. The RFID functionality and chip in the band still works, like it did with the no-charge MagicBand 2.0. So you can still scan into theme parks, redeem Lightning Lanes, and charge purchases. You just can’t do some of the extras like see your band light up for nighttime spectaculars or play Batuu Bounty Hunters.

The show will be on most Bahamian, Caribbean, and Mediterranean sailings this summer. Guests sailing on the Disney Wish beginning June 12 and beyond, who are within 11 to 45 days of their sail date, can now purchase a DisneyBand+ online as part of a preview. As the line’s biggest fans, Pearl members will unlock new at-home and onboard benefits, which will be announced in early 2023. These will not work in any theme parks, although they are identical to MagicBands.

DCL News & Updates

The celebration will be on select sailings from May through September 2023. The first Disney Cruise Line ship, Disney Magic, launched in 1998. This band has been used in both 2015 and 2016 when there were no year-themed bands available for the kids because of low stock or changing of styles.

It’s much more convenient to scan a band than it is to find a Photopass code buried in an app on your phone, so this MagicBand feature saves time and hassle. MagicBand 2.0 is also still available for purchase for Walt Disney World guests in some locations as well (remember, MagicBand 2.0 isn’t supported at Disneyland). On July 27, 2022, a third generation MagicBand debuted at Walt Disney World – MagicBand+. The new band has interactive features within the parks, light up, require charging, and – of course – cost more. There is no information available yet on when DisneyBand+ will be available for purchase after the preview. With that said, it’s highly recommended that you charge the device each night before use.

Key to the World cards will still be issued and required (along with a photo ID for guests 18+) to debark and embark at ports of call. Castaway Club members who sail during the “Silver Anniversary at Sea” will receive a limited edition 11×14 framed Captain Mickey art print in their stateroom. Mickey and Minnie just revealed their new shimmering teal and white costumes for the anniversary celebration. One important thing to know about MagicBands is in which Disney destination you will find them. As of early 2023, MagicBands are now used at both Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida and Disneyland in Anaheim, California. There have been no plans announced to introduce them in any of the international parks.

How much does a DisneyBand+ cost?

I'm in Charleston, South Carolina, navigating the wild world of parenting with my energetic 3-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son. I'm all about sharing our favorites to help fellow parents cut through the noise and transform every day with their kids into a celebration. However, if you will miss that $25, it would probably be better to spend it on two drinks on the cruise then on a nice-to-have arm band. Please note that you still need a Key to the World Card (and photo ID for adults) for each passenger to get on and off the ship at ports. The bands are adjustable and actually the end can be torn off to make it smaller and fit a small child’s wrist. If you already go to Disney World a lot, you might already have the band.

Guests can use the bands to board the ship (at US ports), access their stateroom, and charge food and merchandise to the card on their stateroom folio. All MagicBand generations, including MagicBand+, are fully waterproof. You can take a shower with them or swim with them in your hotel’s pool with no worries.

The bands sometimes come with a colored locking slider to prevent these from falling off of small children’s wrists during the length of the cruise. A black slider is a normal locking mechanism and a red slider indicates that the child has food allergies to be aware of. Order a DisneyBand+ by visiting My Reservations between 11 and 45 days of your sail date if your reservation is paid in full (while supplies last). Trips With Tykes is a family travel blog devoted to simplifying the logistics of traveling with kids of all ages.

That way, you will be able to use them to the fullest on your next Disney vacation. Disney Cruise Line says the smart features of DisneyBand+ will enhance the cruise experience while providing magical surprises along the way; keep reading to learn more. Whether a magic band is worth it for you will just depend on your budget and the number of people in your group. Magic bands are a “nice to have,” but not “need to have” item for Disney cruise. If you are having to question the cost, do not let this be a financial stress, just skip them. Officially, you can have multiple DisneyBands or cards linked to your Disney account, you can continue to use as many as your wrists and pockets can carry.

But, if you have young kids, that will not be alone on the ship, you do not need to get them a magic band. Once DisneyBand+ has debuted on the Disney Wish, you can order a DisneyBand+ by visiting My Reservations between 11 and 45 days of your sail date, if your reservation is paid in full. If you would like to customize your DisneyBand+ with your name and an available color before your sailing, you must do so at least 11 days before your voyage, after reserving your stateroom. When you customize your DisneyBand+, the printed name will appear on the inside of the band. DisneyBand+ devices are not GPS-based and do not enable collection of continuous location signals.
